The scenery: From Turquoise to Wild: The Epic Journey to Bahía de las Águilas If you think Punta Cana is the only face of the Dominican Republic, get ready for a landscape shift that will take your breath away. The journey from Punta Cana Airport to Bahía de las Águilas is more than just a transfer; it’s a soul-stirring road trip through the “Deep South”—a region of raw, cinematic beauty. Here is what awaits you through your window as you travel toward the Caribbean’s last frontier: 1. The Transformation: From Palms to Salt Dunes As we leave the manicured resorts of Punta Cana behind, the landscape begins to evolve. Beyond the bustling capital of Santo Domingo, the lush coconut groves give way to the dramatic, arid plains of Baní. You’ll see the famous salt pans and rolling sand dunes that look like a scene from a desert movie, contrasting sharply against the deep blue of the Caribbean Sea. 2. The Dominican Riviera: Barahona’s Coastal Curves Prepare for the most photogenic part of the drive. As we enter the Barahona province, the road hugs the coastline, carving through lush, emerald-green mountains that plunge directly into the turquoise ocean. 3. The Enigmatic Sierra de Bahoruco Heading further south, the air grows drier and the scenery becomes otherworldly. You’ll find yourself driving through the Sierra de Bahoruco, where the rainforest turns into a prehistoric-looking cactus forest. Towering agave plants and giant cacti stand like sentinels against a backdrop of limestone cliffs. This is the heart of the Jaragua National Park, a UNESCO biosphere reserve where nature remains untouched. 4. The Gateway to Paradise: Cabo Rojo As we approach the final stretch toward Pedernales, the earth turns a striking rusty red—this is Cabo Rojo. The contrast between the crimson soil, the bright green scrubland, and the neon-opal waters of the bay is nothing short of spectacular. Why the journey is worth it By the time you reach the pristine, 5-mile stretch of white sand that is Bahía de las Águilas, you won’t just feel like a tourist—you’ll feel like an explorer. With Canacar.com, you can sit back in air-conditioned comfort, camera in hand, and let the most diverse landscapes of the Caribbean unfold before your eyes.

Because of the distance, many travelers choose private transfers or guided transportation services for comfort and convenience.
3.Why american travelers love Bahía de las Águilas
Many U.S. travelers are now seeking destinations beyond traditional all-inclusive resorts, and Bahía de las Águilas perfectly fits that trend.
Visitors love the area because it offers:

4.Best time to visit Bahía de las Águilas
The southwestern Dominican Republic enjoys warm weather year-round.
Average temperatures usually range between 80°F and 92°F.

The most comfortable weather is generally between:
December and April
During these months, travelers enjoy:
Sunny skies
Lower humidity

From May through November, visitors can still enjoy:
Beautiful sunny days

Fewer tourists
However, temperatures can be hotter, so hydration and sun protection become even more important.
5.What to expect at Bahía de las Águilas
One of the most important things to know is that this is a protected natural area with very limited commercial infrastructure.
That means:
No large resorts directly on the beach
Limited restaurants
Few shops
Minimal crowds
This untouched environment is exactly what makes the destination so special.
Where to stay: glamping vs. traditional
You won’t find a Marriott or a Hilton here—and that’s the point.
Eco-glamping: Most Americans stay in “Cueva de las Águilas” or similar eco-lodges in Cabo Rojo. You’ll sleep in high-end tents on the beach with real beds and wooden floors.
Pedernales town: For those who want more traditional small hotels and local restaurants, the town of Pedernales is about 15 minutes away from the boat launch.
How to access the beach
You cannot drive directly onto the sand of Bahía de las Águilas (it’s a protected National Park).
By boat: Most visitors take a “lancha” (speedbboat) from Cabo Rojo. It’s a stunning 15-minute ride along the limestone cliffs.
By 4×4: There is a rugged overland trail, but it is bumpy, dusty, and requires a serious off-road vehicle. We recommend the boat for the views!
6. Sun & Water: staying safe in the “unfiltered” Caribbean
Because there are no buildings, no trees for shade, and no shops on the actual beach of Bahía de las Águilas, you must come prepared. The sun here is more intense than in Florida or even Puerto Rico.
Sun safety tips (american style)
The “no-shade” reality: The beach is pristine, meaning there are no palm trees near the water. You must rent an umbrella from the boat captains or bring a portable UV-tent.
Reef-safe sunscreen is a must: You are in a National Park. Please use mineral-based sunscreens (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) to protect the untouched coral reefs. Apply before you get on the boat!
Polarized sunglasses: The sand is so white it reflects the sun like snow. Without polarized lenses, you’ll be squinting all day and missing the vibrant hues of the water.
Hydration protocol: Bring a gallon of water per person. There are no vendors selling drinks on the beach. If you’re traveling with Canacar, ask your driver to stop at a local market in Barahona or Pedernales to stock up on a cooler full of ice and water before you reach the park.
Aquatic activity tips (the crystal clear frontier)
Snorkeling the cliffs: The best snorkeling isn’t in the middle of the bay; it’s along the rocky cliffs where the boats pass. You’ll see tropical fish and occasionally manatees or sea turtles.
Watch for stingrays: The water is so clear you can see them from a distance. They are harmless if you leave them alone, but always do the “Stingray Shuffle” (slide your feet in the sand) when entering the water.
No collecting: It is tempting to take home the giant conch shells or pieces of coral you find. Don’t. It is illegal to remove anything from the National Park, and Airport Security at SDQ will confiscate them.
Floaties & gear: Since the water is incredibly calm (like a lake), it’s the perfect place for inflatable loungers. Just make sure you tether them to your bag so the offshore breeze doesn’t drift you toward the horizon!
7. What to eat: from sea to table
In this region, the food is as fresh as it gets.
Lobster & lambí: Pedernales is famous for its spiny lobster and conch (lambí). Most eco-lodges serve these grilled with garlic butter and “tostones” (fried plantains).
The “Barahona” coffee: On your way back with your Canacar driver, make sure to buy a bag of organic coffee from the mountains of Barahona. It’s some of the best in the world.
Southern Dominican cuisine is known for fresh seafood and authentic Caribbean flavors.
Popular dishes include:
Fresh grilled fish
Lobster
Coconut rice
Tostones
Dominican-style seafood stews
Tropical fruits
Food tips
Carry snacks for long excursions
Drink bottled water
Try local seafood restaurants in Pedernales
8. Everything else you need to know
No cell service: Once you enter the National Park, your US roaming plan will likely fail. Embrace the “Digital Detox.”
Best time to go: Aim for weekdays. On holiday weekends, locals from Santo Domingo visit, and the sense of isolation is lost. On a Tuesday in February, you might be the only person on a 5-mile beach.
Cash is king: While some glamping sites take cards, the boat captains and local seafood shacks are cash only. Have Dominican Pesos ready.
